Expect More

We generally get what we 'expect' in life; not what we hope for, not what we wish for, and often, not even what we pray for (say, what?). We get what we expect. The energy of expectation draws things to us. The problem is, many of us expect the worst and hope for the best. Or we expect things to be hard and difficult and challenging. And guess what? You guessed it, they are.

When we expect something is hard to do or hard to overcome, chances are we avoid it. We want things 'easily and effortlessly.' We want things to flow. Yes, we want that, but chances are we don't expect that. And when we think something is hard, we avoid it and struggle against it.

But we can adopt a 'miracle mindset' simply by replacing the word 'hard' with the word 'unfamiliar.' I love what Pam Grout writes in her book, E Cubed, "'Hard' is a four-letter word that is one of the most dangerous words in the English language. It's especially damning when combined with something you want to accomplish, such as lose weight, change your thinking, attract money, or get a hot date!"

What have you been avoiding simply because it is hard to do or hard to accomplish? I'll bet it isn't hard for everyone, so maybe it isn't hard at all, simply unfamiliar. And we can do the unfamiliar all day long. So, let's give it a try and see what happens.

Wisdom From Ernest Holmes
Because we fail to realize that Principle is not bound by precedent, we limit our faith to that which has already been accomplished, and few “miracles” result. When faith finds its proper place under Divine Law, there are no limitations, and what are called miraculous results follow.

Looking at our Stories

What stories do we tell ourselves that seem to be absolutely true and undeniable? Here are some examples: "I'm not good at relationships," "I hate exercising," "I've never been organized," "I have no sense of direction," I'm not photogenic," "I'm not good at small talk," "I have trouble sleeping," "I'm lousy at math," "I don't like to cook."

This list just scratches the surface of the various stories we believe to be true about ourselves. And we get busy making sure we have the evidence and proof to back them up - cementing these stories in place in our consciousness that they are absolutely true.

What would happen if we took just one of our deeply held beliefs and actively looked for its opposite? I wonder what we would find. Could it be possible that we really don't 'hate' to exercise, that it is merely uncomfortable? Could it be possible that we really aren't disorganized but we've not ever put our attention to being organized and it is uncomfortable?

It's time to stop being afraid of our genius, time to stop doubting ourselves and what we’ve come here to do, and time to stop living in the safety zone on time-out. We are brilliant and amazingly awesome and it is time we open up to that and begin to tell new stories.

And you know what?, your brilliance is blinding!

Wisdom From Ernest Holmes
"Just keep right on knocking at the doorway of your consciousness until every “no” becomes a “yes,” every negation an affirmation, every fear a faith. You cannot fail if you remain steadfast."

Release - It Sounds So Easy

Letting go of old beliefs, old mental constructs, old identities, old patterns of thinking and behaving and allowing the wholeness and truth and beauty of Life to wash over us can create miracles and magic in our lives. It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? Letting go. We may even intellectually understand that when we 'let go' of the old, we create an opening for something new.

Release. Relax. Open up. Go with the flow. Breathe. Yes, it sounds easy and sometimes it might feel to us that we might fall to our death if we let go of what we’ve been holding onto so tightly for years. It sounds easy and yet we resist those ideas and we have a tendency to cling to the familiar, to argue for our limitations, to give excuses, and to fight to remain the same.

Maybe one of the things we can release and let go of this year are the boxes we put ourselves in. How do we identify ourselves? I'm a Virgo so that means I'm analytical and the clothes in my closet are organized by color. I'm an introvert so that means that I am extremely uncomfortable networking. I'm super-busy so that means I don't have too much excess time to simply hang out, play, and have fun.

These are just three examples and there are dozens (if not hundreds) more. What if none of those 'I am' statements are true? What if they are just made up but I keep them active by repeating them over and over and looking for physical and external evidence that they are true? How is that helping me to let go, surrender, and open up to the real Truth: God is, I am, and so it is? [hint: it isn't helping]

What box can you release yourself from
?

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
If we would take time, once a day at least, to let go of all that is not true...doubt, distrust, worry, condemnation and fear, and lay hold of Life in Its expressions of beauty, truth and wholeness...we would be healed.”

New Year - New You? Or Same Old, Same Old?

I like to have personal themes each year and for 2016, my theme is Loving Life, Loving Myself, and Loving God in a Glorious Way. And in order to do that differently or in a greater way than before, I need to not only DO things differently, I need to BE different, right? Now, of course I don't need to wait for a new year right? I can do things differently and be different and think a different thought any moment of any day, because I know that every moment is a chance to begin again. Every moment has untapped potential.

What ideas or old beliefs are you ready to release? What can you do this year to do things differently or show up differently so that you can create a life you love to live? How will you reflect this year? Abundance or lack? Health and vitality or disease? Feeling and processing or spiritual bypassing? Being bold or playing safe? Are you ready to make 2016 a turning point in your life?

Take some time and think about 2015 and what went well. What did you learn about yourself? What do you want to create more of? What are you committed to releasing? In what ways did you follow your bliss and contribute to the world? Where did you feel out of alignment or out of the flow? What did you learn from those moments? What experiences do you want to create this year? And who must you become in order to do it?

Make a decision and allow Life to amaze and inspire you.

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
The reflection of an image in a mirror is an exact likeness of the image which is held before the mirror. So the Law of Cause and Effect reflects back to us a likeness of the images of our thought. Thus we are told that we reflect the glory of God. But too often we reflect the fear and limitation of man rather than the glory of God.

The Light Within

There is that within us which lights us up and if we simply allow ourselves to be a vehicle for the Divine. We don't need to go in search of anything because we'll find everything we need is already here and already within. The Love of the Divine, the Joy of the Divine, the Abundance of the Divine, and the Wholeness of the Divine burns bright within us. However, we need to make a conscious choice to turn within and connect with the luminescence that we are.

This time of year (or any time of year, actually) can bring up feelings that are uncomfortable or make us unhappy.  Maybe we feel lonely or unlovable. Maybe we feel we don't have enough money or talent or good looks. Or maybe we feel like a victim or a failure. And what are those feelings but a turning away from the Truth and a refusal to look at the Light of Truth within? We can follow the light within to the Greater Light and a realization that we are the out-picturing of God.

Today is Christmas and it symbolizes the birth of the light within us all. We are the perfect union of God in man (and woman). It is time to remember our relationship to Spirit and begin to step into our courage and let our own brand of light shine so we can make the difference we are here to make.

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
Each of us should seek that beam of light within and follow it to the great Light - the Light that is in everything. We must acquiesce to It, and surrender all that has made us unhappy, all that has isolated us from It. Only then can God fully pronounce Itself through us and in us, and personalize Itself as us.

Unwrapping the Real Self

There is within each one of us an impulse to be our 'real self' and to express the Divine in our own brilliant way, but we've gotten off the path somehow. We've followed someone else's idea of who we are and what we should be doing and maybe we're going in circles trying to find our way home.

We may get distracted by self-doubt, by wanting to know the outcome even before we start, by choosing comfort over growth, by not claiming our power, and by not owning up to our Truth that we are the Divine in action. We wait for the perfect time to begin and while we are waiting, the world is being robbed of a most valuable asset: us. We have come here to make a difference but we can't make that difference if we hide out.

Do we stand behind the walls of comfort and safety? Do we water down our truth in order to fit in or to be accepted? What gifts have we kept buried? How are we hiding our passion, our courage, our boldness? Where do we play it safe, not take a risk, not dare to stand up or stand out.

It's time to unleash the 'real you.' The 'real you' is wonderful and marvelous. The 'real you' is courageous and bold. The 'real you' is caring and compassionate. And the 'real you' might be cranky and ornery. And the 'real you' might be needy and whiny. And it is all the wonderful tapestry of our life. Are we open to loving ourselves anyway? What a great holiday gift that would be!

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
There is an inner urge in our own minds to grow, to expand, to break down the barriers of previous limitations, and to ever widen our experience. This persistent urge is a Divine influence, and irresistible force, and constitutes the greatest impulse in human experience. Mostly misinterpreted and misunderstood, ...it is still the urge back of all accomplishment, the promise of all fulfillment.         ~Living Without Fear

The Quest to Feel Good

New Thought has been called the 'feel good' religion. We talk a lot about moving through life with 'grace and ease.' We want to manifest our dreams and desires 'easily and effortlessly.' We look for signs. We ask our guides. We are told if something 'feels good' than it is probably a 'yes' and if it doesn't feel good it is probably a 'no.' And so our life becomes about doing what 'feels good.'
I think we need to move beyond that mindset.

If we want to create something new in our life, we may have to be dedicated and disciplined to think new thoughts and create new patterns of behavior. These new thoughts and new behaviors may bring us to the very edge of our comfort zone and take us on a path of the unknown which will very likely not feel good. In fact, 'feeling good' may help us cover up those ideas that will lead to growth and transformation.

So, doing what makes us feel good may not be the answer. Relying on the Divine instead of relying on what we can see doesn't always feel good; in fact, it feels scary. I gave very personal talks all month at CPL Sedona and it didn't really feel good; it felt self-centered, egotistical, and vulnerable. Taking that step into the limelight or having the courage to disagree yet speak our truth is very uncomfortable and doesn't feel good.

So, if you buy into the idea that you only want to do things that make you feel good, you'll likely never grow, never dream, and never get to experience what it might look like to actually open your heart and mind to your infinite possibilities.

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
Developing confidence in ourselves, in our ability to meet and handle all undesirable situations, requires that we must have confidence in that Something which is greater than we are. Then we will have spiritual self-reliance.

When this is done the lesser must always submit to the greater. Weakness will give way to strength, despair will turn to hope, hate will become love, failure will become success, and sickness will dissolve into health.

The action that takes place is not one of despotic or overruling harshness, but one that moves in harmony, love, beauty, warmth, and order, quietly transforming all that is unlike it.
