Protecting Yourself

I've begun to think for myself and not just repeat catch phrases and ideas from the latest New Thought guru or author. Well, that's not quite true. I've been thinking for myself for awhile, but haven't shared my thinking broadly (although those folks close to me get an earful!!).

You know how so many of us like to put the white light (or even sometimes a golden light or a green light) around things for protection? Many of us surround our cars, our houses, and even ourselves with this light of protection.

So here's my question: if there is only One Thing and that One Thing is God and It operates in and through absolutely everything and there is nothing else but God, and that God is a Power for Good, then what do we need protection from? The answer would be 'nothing.'

Well, we might need protection from our Monkey Mind thoughts. But if we think that something 'out there' is out to get us or can hurt us or take something away from us, then that is our clue that we have completely forgotten that God is all there is (see paragraph above).

Maybe we need to start putting that 'white light of protection' around our limiting beliefs, our stories, our excuses, and the temptation of our Monkey Mind to stall and sabotage [tongue in cheek].

When our mindset tells us there is not enough, that others have something we want, or that having that 'thing' will make us happy and satisfied, we have turned away from Spirit and allowed ourselves to feel weak and vulnerable. We are indeed powerful when we unite with the One Power. Let's not forget that.

I've always been partial to a pink light myself because it reminds me of fairy princesses! Or is it that it reminds me of 'rose-colored' glasses?

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
"We are powerful only as we unite with Power. We are weak when we desert this Power."  [Science of Mind]

"The Power of Life within you is a spiritual power, able to bring to you permanent peace, increasing happiness and joy, and greater material abundance. These things that have made man miserable can be eliminated through the conscious use of this Power." [365 Science of Mind]

It's Not About the Facts of Life

Sometimes we need some mountain-moving faith, especially if the mountains we want to move include lack of money, lack of health, lack of relationships, anger, grief, guilt, shame, resentment, or just plain old feeling stuck.

Instead of having mountain-moving faith in the Infinite, we seem to have faith in the problems we are facing. They loom large in our lives and take up a lot of our thinking. Maybe we worry, get anxious, or stay stuck in fear - especially when we can't see the way out.

In the quote below, Ernest Holmes tells us the remedy to every problem or challenge is the Truth. However, many of us seem to confuse the 'facts of life' with the Truth of Spiritual Principle. Facts are temporary human conditions and are subject to change. When we persist in only seeing the facts then the Truth is hidden from our view. It's as if we have mountain-moving faith in the current limitation or challenge we are experiencing.

It's time to correct any confusion between the 'facts' and the Truth and allow the Divine to move those mountains.

And don't let any thoughts about "it's easier said than done" prohibit you from trying (and succeeding). The remedy is right where you are!

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
In the Science of Mind, we learn that persistent, constructive thought is the greatest power known and the most effective. If the visible effect in our lives is not what it should be, if we are unhappy, sick and poverty stricken, we know the remedy. The Truth is always the remedy, and the Truth is that the law of liberty is the only real law. When we reverse the process of thought, the effect will be reversed.          ~ Love and Law

Planting Seeds

A woman is warming up before her morning jog - she stood a few feet from a large oak tree, placed both hands on it and pushed against it to stretch her calf muscles. She was in the midst of this standard runner's ritual when a young man passed by. He stopped, turned, and shook his head. "Lady, you'll be there forever doing it that way," he said. "Use a saw."
Sometimes we may feel like this woman, only we are not pushing against the oak tree to stretch our calf muscles; we are pushing against the oak tree to make something happen! We hear ideas in New Thought that we are in charge of our destiny; that we are in control of our future. And those words "in charge" and "in control" also seem to signify that a lot of pushing and straining needs to happen.

And then we are told to let go, to release, and to allow. That seems to be a paradox, doesn't it? We are in control but we need to let go. We are in charge but we need to release. And then some of us go to the extreme of 'letting go" and releasing so much that if nothing happens, then we think it's a sign that it isn't meant to be - as if some force external to us determines what we are supposed to experience. It's no wonder we are confused!

It might be easier to think about planting seeds - planting thought seeds, planting vibration seeds, planting emotion seeds, and planting belief seeds. It is by planting these seeds that we are 'in control' of our future. We are in the seed-planting business; God is in the outcome business. And that's not so confusing.
And the letting go part? That's just letting the Infinite grow what we've planted. Easy peasy.

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
Just as you watch your garden that foreign seeds shall not fall into it, producing a growth of undesirable plants, so you must refuse entrance to any thoughts you do not wish not see manifested in your life. Guard well this garden of your mind. It is God's garden of your soul. It is your Garden of Eden wherein may grow your fondest desires and hopes, blossoming into fulfillment.

Or, if you permit, the weeds of destruction, fear and doubt will choke out the beauty of hope until despair along remains. Watch carefully then, this garden of your soul. Plant there only seeds of happiness, of joy, of peace and of good will. It may be necessary to cultivate your garden, to uproot the weeds and straighten out the rows planting new seeds - new ideas, broader visions and deeper realizations of life.

New aspirations must be bedded here, fertilized with the fervor of hope, the conviction of faith, the beauty of wholeness, and the quietness of peace. Watch our garden carefully, guard it patiently, waiting for a new harvest - for you shall reap what you have sown.

Change is the Name of the Game

Most of us seem to resist change, especially if it isn't our idea. But even when change is our idea, we don't always embrace it right away. Maybe we begin to move forward in the changed direction, but we often hit detours or lose our way and find ourselves right back where we started. And while we are in the midst of change, it can feel like we are living through the uncomfortable in-between times of life. You know those times when we are not quite sure of our footing; not wanting to completely let go of where we've been, but not quite embracing where we're going either.

Of course any change we want to create on the outside must first come from a change on the inside. And we each need to change our minds about something. We want to evolve and become better, bolder, happier, or healthier. Maybe we want to be more successful, more talented, more generous, or more prosperous.

Instead of resisting change, we can embrace the idea that we are always ready to change our mind and grow in awareness of the Truth of who we are, grow in awareness that who we are is the Divine in action, grow in awareness that we are meant for good and more good, grow in awareness that we are magnificent and awesome, and grow in awareness that as we change our thinking, we are opening our hearts and minds to our infinite possibilities.

And guess what? Change looks really good on you!

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
There are going to be changes in our lives from hour to hour and day to day, and we cannot escape them. It is the nature of the Universe. Let us accept change, make the most of it, and capitalize on it. Life can become a glorious adventure, increasingly filled with more of every good thing as we gradually or suddenly come to change our pattern of thinking so that it embraces more of those good things.                ~ Practical Application of the Science of Mind

Up, Up, and Away

Two men were walking in a field when a bull charged them. One man scampered up a tree while the other stood defiantly in the bull's path. "Get up here, you idiot!" called the man in the branches. "The Lord will protect me!" retorted the other man. "No! Get up here, you idiot!" the other screamed again just at the very moment the bull butted the man on the ground, tossing him like a rag doll into the air and the trotted off triumphantly. The friend scampered down from the tree to help his bruised friend. "I thought for sure the Lord would help me!" complained the injured man. "He tried," answered his friend. "Didn't you hear Him calling you from the tree?"

What is calling us? How are we being urged, perhaps again and again, to take that step, make that connection, move out of our comfort zone, try something new, dare to risk, or just simply show up and share our gifts and talents in new ways? And maybe we can hear that call or that urge, but we stand in place defiantly with our excuses as armor, thinking those excuses will save us.

And some of us refuse to take any new action until our current situation either gets so painful or something radical happens that forces us to move. And in those situations we don't find ourselves in the UP position, which I'm defining U.P. as 'Understanding Principle.'

When we 'Understand Principle,' (and I mean really 'Understand Principle), then we can soar into our highest purpose, our most amazing self, and move away from our old and limiting beliefs. What have you wanted to do or start that you've been putting off? It's time to move UP and live it UP and not get stuck in the quicksand of excuses. Up, up, and away!

Would you like to fly in a beautiful balloon of possibilities, joy, opulence, abundance, enthusiasm, health, vitality, and opportunities? Yeah, I thought so!

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
Every person is the cause of their own experience, whether they know it or not. We are all carrying the negative experiences of our past into the future merely because we have not disconnected them from our minds. If we are creating a negative future it is because we have not changed our thought about it.

What If

When I first started to do some coaching back in 1998, I attracted a lot of clients who wanted to 'know what their purpose was' and 18 years later, I still attract those seeking to know what their purpose is. Could that be because I have been asking myself that same question for as long as I can remember?
And here's what I've found out.....

Our purpose is what we say it is. What if all of this hunting and searching for our purpose, our passion, finding the meaning of life, or why we are here is really just our own ploy to not step into our power and passion because we are afraid to make a bold statement and declare who we really are? Because chances are that all the time we are searching for our purpose, our life is on hold.

There is only One and we are it! There isn't some Being up in the sky somewhere who determines what we are supposed to be doing. We know ourselves better than anyone. But we have doubts and beliefs that get in the way and we have that ever-present Monkey Mind that doesn't want us to start until we have all the answers. We get to make up the answers....and the questions. We are so busy asking, "What is my purpose?" that we forget to ask "Why am I not doing what makes my heart sing?" or "What limiting beliefs are blocking me from taking inspired action?"

What if it was as simple as what Joseph Campbell said and we simply need to  follow our bliss? What if our purpose was to simply be who we are without comparing? What if.....?

What if you stop searching and start living? What if you awaken to the Truth of Who You Are and start living as though you are the Divine in Action? What if by simply being yourself you are changing the world?

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
Enthusiasm is a complete assurance and confidence that there is a Power within us greater than we are that we may use. It should be our purpose to awaken this joy in us again and enter into the game of living; not sitting on the sidelines as though we were isolated, but on the field ourselves. It is God's enthusiasm and becomes ours on acceptance.             ~ The Power of an Idea

Tune in and Listen

We all know (or most of us do in any case) that old joke about the man on the streets of New York City who asked someone, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" The person leaned on a street sign, laughed a little and said, "Practice. Practice is how to get to Carnegie Hall."

We may want to 'get to' a lot of things and places, but we don't
need to 'get to' God because God is already here and is who we are. However, we may need practice looking within and making that connection instead of looking at the external world and assessing and judging everything through our 3-dimensional eyes. Part of that practice is to tune in and listen to the wisdom.

We all have a built-in ability to successfully navigate the twists and turns of life and find our way home - back to center; back to the Presence within; back to our true selves. But we need to learn to be still and listen; we need to learn to be human 'be-ings' instead of human 'do-ings' in the midst of feeling lost or confused or fearful or sad or lonely. We need to tune in and listen to the wisdom of the Divine within.

Are we wise enough to trust that voice which is the voice of the Divine that is whispering to us? Are we wise enough to listen and to follow? Are we wise enough to practice and put our faith in the Infinite Source of all life? Are we wise enough to remember that we never walk alone? Are we wise enough to be true to our own soul? Tune in and listen!
When you tune in and listen, you'll hear rounds of applause, the universe jumping up and down with joy, and dancing in the streets. Yeah!

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
As our faith grows, through definite and constant practice, it will do more than satisfy simply our needs. It will bring forth that which is Divine within ourselves. It will bring forth hidden talents which have been lying dormant. It will cause us never again to feel insecure, lonely, or separated. For such faith will make us whole.
