Number One Enemy of Success

What if this doesn't work?

Have you ever had an idea that got you excited? Have you wanted to combine your passion with your talent and take it to the world in some way? Maybe you plan and research; maybe you talk to your friends; maybe you even come up with a really cool name. And then it happens. The question: What if it doesn’t work? Somehow we forget to ask, “What if it DOES work?”

And let’s be honest for a minute. What if it doesn’t work? So what? It’s not the end of the world. But our rabid self talk will let us think it is absolutely the end of the world. We would be hard-pressed to find anyone who started something that worked every time.

We’ve all started relationships and seen them fail. We’ve been gung ho about a hobby only to let it go after years (or sometimes less). We’ve started new jobs, new hobbies, and new ways of eating. And sometimes we’ve stopped.

Did we stop because it didn’t work or because we didn’t have confidence? Did we stop because it didn’t work or because we lost interest? Did we stop because it didn’t work or because we found something else we liked better?

We get afraid when all we focus on is the outcome.

We get stuck in either/or thinking. Either I’m a millionaire or I’m not successful. Either I have a thriving business or I’m not successful. Either I’m a best-selling author or I’m not successful. Either I lose all the weight I need to or I’m not successful. Feel free to replace ‘I’m not successful’ with ‘I’m a failure’ or ‘I’m a loser’ (or your own personal favorite).

"You're not worthwhile because you have fulfilled your dreams. You're worthwhile because you exist. You're not enough because you have a good job. You're enough even if you haven't worked in thirteen years. You're not enough because you are loved by many people. You're enough even if nobody knows your name. You're not enough because your financial portfolio is enviable. You're enough even if you're dead broke. And becoming more successful doesn't make you enough, either. It only changes your experience. It doesn't change you." ~ Dr. David Walker

I’m good at starting things.

I’ve started two churches, a Brownie Girl Scout Troop, three LLC businesses, a C-Corporation, a coaching business, and a real estate investing business. And I’ve fallen prey to the either/or mentality. Either these businesses and ideas succeeded or there was something wrong with me.
When I focused only on the outcome, all I saw were my flaws. I only saw all the ways I wasn’t good enough. I saw the ways my ideas failed to take hold. I saw all of my time and energy wasted on pipe dreams.

I never saw that I was a visionary. I never saw my confidence, strength, or courage.

Where do you need help spotting your gifts, strengths, and courage?

CALL TO ACTION: In the next 24 – 48 hours

  • Keep a journal of small actions (yes, small) you can take daily and track when completed.
    • Example 1: “Today, I’m going to listen to a TED Talk that inspires me.” When you complete it, come back to your journal, and write “Success.”
    • Example 2: “Today, I’m going to compliment three people” and when you complete it, come back to your journal, and write, “Success.”
  • For extra credit, list the activities in your journal that you started but didn’t turn out so well that you might still be telling negative stories about. Behind each of these, list what awesome quality was needed for you to even begin (confidence, courage, faith, compassion, trust, vision, etc.)

When you review your journal, all you see are the various ways that you are a success.

It’s time to say ‘yes’ to the success that you are.

Making the Connection

We talk a lot about turning within and making that connection with our Sacred Self, our Divine Self, the wisdom, genius, and brilliance within. And yet, many of us have a fear of making that deep connection with ourselves because we are afraid of what we might find.

I was a master at avoiding looking within. I was good at pretending and I did look within to the places that weren't too deep or too terrifying. Needless to say, I did all of my 'looking' with my head and not with my heart. But I finally embarked on a journey of 'feeling, revealing, and healing' and this journey has been a heart opening and not completely unpleasant. I've discovered my own wisdom and I found there was nothing to fear. In fact, it's been rather entertaining!

What if we are actually betraying our gifts when we fail to connect deeply with ourselves? Even if it looks like we are sharing our gifts, maybe we are actually withholding the fullness of them. If we look within, are we afraid we are powerful or are we afraid we are flawed? Whatever the answer, it's time to face that fear and remember the fear isn't the truth. It's time to let go of that lesser idea (fear) and rise to the heights of glory.

Making that sacred connection with ourselves can be magic in our lives.

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
But it is only as you let go of the lesser that you can take hold of the greater, only as you drop confusion that you can entertain peace, only as you transcend doubt and fear that you can be lifted up to the hill tops of the inner Life.

Release - It Sounds So Easy

Letting go of old beliefs, old mental constructs, old identities, old patterns of thinking and behaving and allowing the wholeness and truth and beauty of Life to wash over us can create miracles and magic in our lives. It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? Letting go. We may even intellectually understand that when we 'let go' of the old, we create an opening for something new.

Release. Relax. Open up. Go with the flow. Breathe. Yes, it sounds easy and sometimes it might feel to us that we might fall to our death if we let go of what we’ve been holding onto so tightly for years. It sounds easy and yet we resist those ideas and we have a tendency to cling to the familiar, to argue for our limitations, to give excuses, and to fight to remain the same.

Maybe one of the things we can release and let go of this year are the boxes we put ourselves in. How do we identify ourselves? I'm a Virgo so that means I'm analytical and the clothes in my closet are organized by color. I'm an introvert so that means that I am extremely uncomfortable networking. I'm super-busy so that means I don't have too much excess time to simply hang out, play, and have fun.

These are just three examples and there are dozens (if not hundreds) more. What if none of those 'I am' statements are true? What if they are just made up but I keep them active by repeating them over and over and looking for physical and external evidence that they are true? How is that helping me to let go, surrender, and open up to the real Truth: God is, I am, and so it is? [hint: it isn't helping]

What box can you release yourself from
?

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
If we would take time, once a day at least, to let go of all that is not true...doubt, distrust, worry, condemnation and fear, and lay hold of Life in Its expressions of beauty, truth and wholeness...we would be healed.”

Preparing for the Inner Shift

Last Sunday was Easter and for me it is a time to celebrate the inner spirit - the spirit of overcoming; the ability within each of us to rise up and meeting situations; to learn the things we need to learn (like remembering the Truth of who we are); and to experience a new birth or transformation of consciousness.

We could consider this time as our hero's journey when we confront the unexpected, the unknown, or the scary and yet we still find a way to break through and rise up and overcome. And our journey begins with an entry point. Our entry point is life nudging us to make a shift.

Sometimes our entry point is a serious diagnosis, which could look like a betrayal by our body; the loss of a relationship, which could look like a betrayal by our spouse, our partner, our child, or our friend; getting fired, which could look like a betrayal by our employer; or some other event that knocks us off our center. And sometimes our entry point is a passing comment that someone makes.

But whatever our entry point to our own hero's journey,  it's about new beginnings and making successful transitions. It's about taking time to pause and reflect on our True Nature. It's about spending some time alone to renew our soul and remember God's power. It's about finding opening up to our infinite possibilities.

Our entry point could lead us on a journey to diminishing our false beliefs. Are you up for it?

Wisdom from Ernest Holmes
...in such degree as we can shift the basis of our imagery, our belief, our emotional and mental reactions to life, we can come to a place, individually, of peace and security and happiness, then gradually as these changes take place there will be a corresponding change in our environment.

What Are You Passing On?

I was reading an email this week from a woman named Pamela Bruner who does EFT Tapping (Pamela's Website). She flew into Orlando and after she got off the plane and boarded the shuttle to the terminal, a woman sat down next to her and began to cry. Pamela asked if she needed some help and the woman replied, "My son's come back from Afghanistan for a visit, but I can't go see him! He's in California, and I couldn't get on the plane."

After more conversation, Pamela had uncovered that the woman next to her was afraid to fly so she couldn't get on ANY plane. Pamela explained she had helped lots of people with phobias and may be able to help her so she could get on a plane and see her son. After a few more minutes of conversation, the woman said something that shocked Pamela; she said, "Thank you, but I think I'll pass."

The answer to her prayers was there; it was within reach. The transformation she needed was right in front of her, and yet she said no. How many times do we say 'no?' What's stopping you from your dreams? What will it take to say "yes" to creating your amazing life? What will it take for you to say "yes" to living a life of power, passion, prosperity, and purpose?

There are people all around us who can help us to emerge from fear, worry, doubt, and unhappiness; we need to be open. Maybe the next time someone offers to help or support you, accept the offer and don't pass it up.

Lab Tests With a Different Score

I was having some blood work done the other day when the lab tech excused herself to help with another patient in the next room. It was an 8 year-old boy who was getting his blood drawn. He was crying...a lot. His mother and his little sister were also in the room with him. I could hear the lab tech saying, "don't move so much or it will hurt more." She said this over and over again. Obviously, it wasn't working.

And then it happened. Shrieking! Loud, fearful screaming. I knew it was at that point when the little boy saw the needle. Why didn't anyone tell him to close his eyes? At this point, I was getting tense and nervous. I was actually allowing this boy's fear to have an effect on me (and I don't mind getting blood drawn.)

And then it was quiet. The very thing he was trying to get away from, the thing he was hoping his screams would prevent was now at hand - and it wasn't so bad. I wondered if he asked himself why he made such a big deal over it, but he was probably just glad he was alive.

How many times are we like that little boy? We worry and fret; we think this will be the worst day of our lives; we create dragons and monsters in our minds. No one tells us to close our eyes or think of something else. And after all of our fear and worry, we realize it wasn't so bad after all.

Even if we don't always realize it, we are free to choose thoughts of joy, happiness, security, and love and we don't have to keep revisiting the dungeon of fear.
